Towage capacity increased in world’s busiest coal port
Svitzer Glenrock, ASD 3212 design tug, arrives in Newcastle

A new tugboat is about to start servicing the world’s busiest coal port, expanding its owner’s towage capabilities. Svitzer has introduced a new azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug into the port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia.

Svitzer Glenrock is an ASD 3212 design tug built by Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam. It is fitted with a render recovery forward winch, which ensures the line always remains under a safe tension, even when sailing in large waves.

This enhances its capability to undertake active-escort duties for handling Cape-class bulk carriers and petroleum tankers safely under all circumstances. Svitzer Glenrock is expected to begin operations in August after crew have received familiarisation training.

It has also been committed to Svitzer’s Australian Maritime Safety Authority obligation to be available for emergency assists for any vessel with propulsion or steerage problems outside the harbour.
